Quick Tips and Tricks for Presents if you Have Sneaky Kids that like to peek!

Do you have children (or adults) who just can't resist searching for their gifts in the weeks before Christmas? They'll squeeze, shake smell the parcels in the hopes of finding out what's inside before the big day. Perhaps they will even peel back a corner of the wrapping paper to take a peek? Do they always find your secret hiding places? If so then this tip is for you. It does work, I have personally used it successfuly in the past.

Gather together some random junk items; small empty boxes, strange-shaped existing but forgotten toys, old jars, cardboard inserts from toilets tissue rolls, basically anything that is not a present and won't be missed for a few weeks. Wrap them in Christmas paper and label them to the particularly bad offenders, then place them under your Christmas Tree exclaiming that you have given up on hiding the presents this year as they always get found!

I have wrapped anything from stones, to old individual portion sized cereal boxes filled with sand (for some added weight) to existing but un-listened-to CDs, one of my own sweaters, and much, much more. It worked, the kids were fooled enough to do all their poking and prodding with the fake gifts and never once thought to look elsewhere for their real gifts!

During the festive period you may find that many venues are already decorated with a Christmas theme and this may save you both time and expense. If you find that you do have to decorate your own venue however, here are some simple and creative ideas for a romantic, festive theme.

  • Use clear or white Christmas lights draped behind a white voile as a backdrop for the ceremony
  • Small holly wreathes placed flat on the table with a large, white Church candle in the middle make a simple yet elegant centrepiece for your reception venue
  • If your budget can stretch to it, a Bride and Groom snowglobe with festive base makes a great alternative centrpiece
More Tips and Ideas:

  • For wedding favors you can give out Christmas ornaments personalized with the Bride and Grooms' names or make personalized Christmas Crackers (see here for a 'how to' video).

  • Red roses, calla lilies, and poinsettia are wonderful winter wedding flowers

Santa Claus, who is he really?

The name Santa Claus is a  derived from the Dutch Sinterklaas, which means Saint Nicholas. Nicholas was the Bishop of Myra, in modern day Turkey, during the fourth century AD. He was noted for the care of Children and the giving of gifts. Saint Nicholas traditionally appeared in bishoply attire, accompanied by helpers, asking about the behaviour of children during the past year before deciding whether they deserved a gift or not. By the 13th century Saint Nicholas was well known throughout the Netherlands, and the practice of gift-giving in his name spread to other parts of central and southern Europe. At the Reformation in 16th–17th century Europe, many Protestants changed the gift bringer to the 'Christ Child' or Christkindl, corrupted in English to Kris Kringle, and the date of giving gifts changed from December the 6th to Christmas Eve. In early depictions, Santa Claus was shown wearing Bishop's robes.

Father Christmas, a jolly, well nourished, bearded man who typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, predates the Santa Claus character and is first recorded in early 17th century England. However rather than being the bearer of gifts, Father Christmas was more associated with holiday merrymaking and drunkenness.

The many names seem to have become synonymous around 1920 at which time the appearance was also standardised.

Christmas Card Facts

The first commercially available Christmas cards were commissioned by Sir Henry Cole (whom had introduced the 'Penny Post' three years earlier) in London in 1843. The card featured an illustration by John Callcott Horsley - a picture of a family gathering with a small child drinking from a glass of wine. The card proved controversial, however a total of 2,050 were printed and sold that year.

"Official" Christmas cards began in the UK with Queen Victoria in the 1840s. The British royal family's cards are generally portraits reflecting significant personal events of the year. In 1953, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official White House card.
